One Room Challenge: Week One

The day has finally arrived! It is the start of the One Room Challenge and I am both excited AND scared! If you are unfamiliar with the One Room Challenge is is a widely anticipated bi-annual event where designers have 6 weeks to completely transform a space. But in actual real time, this really is only 5 weeks to transform the space if you account for photography and preparing the final blog post. Let me repeat: 5 weeks to completely transform a space! AH! Each week I will be documenting our process with our bedroom so you can see all the steps it takes to pull together a space.

A few months ago we made the move from a condo to a house. The house is coming together beautifully, but the one room that needs some love is our master bedroom. Mo’ space, mo’ problems! These are the kinda problems I like to have. And now that we have a larger bedroom to work with, lets wave hello to our soon-to-be king sized bed. HELLO! But, in the meantime let’s start with the before:

The biggest challenge we have to tackle in this room is the jut out of the largest wall (shown below). This is super common in Toronto homes and this is caused by the fireplace chimney. Since we are upgrading to a king bed, this is the only wall in the room that can fit both the bed and nightstands. I would like the bed to sit up flush against the wall, so this means a little construction work to make the entire wall even.

Our first step is to frame and drywall this wall to make it flush. I am super thankful to have my very talented carpenter boyfriend, Chris, tackle this first step this weekend. And I am also super thankful to Chris who supports all of my crazy ideas. Thanks babe!

As you can see the before isn’t terrible. It feels minimal in a cool Scandi way, but it’s lacking symmetry, cohesiveness and personality.

What I love about the space? How bright, light and airy it feels. What I don’t love about the space? The unbalanced feel and the current mix of furniture. The challenge? Creating a space that feels bright and minimal, but also feels complete, beautiful and has additional storage.

Tune in for next week where I’ll be sharing the design plan!
